E-bike speed is a serious problem
In the Netherlands, the problem of speeding e-bikes is serious, and although the law stipulates that the maximum speed of e-bikes is 25 kilometers per hour, many riders increase their speed through illegal modifications.
Amsterdam’s traffic director pointed out that due to changes, nearly half of the city’s e-bikes exceed the legal speed limit, posing a significant road safety hazard.

E-bikes are fitted with a module that connects to the platform via 5G, allowing more accurate measurements of the bike’s position and speed.
When the module detects that a rider is approaching a busy area, it sends two forms of warnings: an alert, which notifies the rider of a possible danger ahead, and a monitoring mode, which automatically restricts or cuts off motor power when the rider does not slow down.
Timmer, the designer, emphasizes that the purpose of technology is not to punish riders, but to raise their awareness of potential dangers.
Safety regulation is controversial
The debate on e-bike safety(e-bike battery safety) has reached a boiling point in Amsterdam, with many calling for stronger regulation and enforcement. However, the resolution has caused public controversy.
Some have expressed concerns about data privacy, while others argue that stricter measures are needed to protect other road users from e-bikes, especially those equipped with aftermarket modifications that illegally increase the speed at which e-bikes travel.
Technology to remotely reduce e-bike speeds may seem too strong for some, but some current city e-bike and e-scooter rental programs already employ technologies that limit speeds in specific locations, such as geo-fencing.
In addition, the Institute suggested that the best solution would be to integrate ASG technology into the displays of existing e-bikes, which would be done by working with manufacturers. The Institute for Urbanism is currently discussing this with a number of manufacturers.
In addition to Amsterdam, the Institute for Town Building plans to test its technology in several other European cities, including Munich, Athens and Milan.Timmer says they are looking forward to seeing how it is used in other cities and how it will work in different environments.
The institute is also actively exploring the possibility of applying technology to electric scooters and public transportation.
