    European bicycle imports surge 30%

    In a year when supply chain tensions have plagued the market, EU countries have seen significant and unprecedented growth in bicycle imports.

    Since e-bike sales have been gaining momentum, the market value has been slowly but steadily declining.

    The average retail price of bicycle products imported into Europe has now risen significantly.

    The value of e-bike imports into Europe grew by double digits and surpassed the volume of bicycle shipments imported into Europe.

    Total sales to Asian bicycle exporters in 2022 are down from 2021. Total shipments of regular bikes fell 6.37% from 5.4 million units in 2021 to more than 5 million units last year.

    Shipments from Cambodia, the largest supplier, rose 18.44 percent to 1.2 million units.

    European Bicycle Imports Surge 30%

    The country now supplies nearly a quarter of the EU’s bicycle imports.

    Cambodia’s market share increased from 18.9% in 2021 to 23.8% in 2022.

    However, most of the top 10 bicycle exporters to the EU will ship fewer bikes in 2022 than in 2021.

    Orders from traditionally large bicycle manufacturers, including China, are shifting to other countries such as Bangladesh, Tunisia and Thailand.

    Bangladesh, in particular, is currently experiencing a boom in bicycle factory construction.

    According to the country’s Export Promotion Bureau, Bangladesh is actively seeking to diversify its exports, with a focus on engineered products and bicycles, to meet growing demand in international markets.

    Bangladesh is currently one of the countries benefiting from duty-free import sales of bicycles to the EU.

    France plans to invest 2 billion euros in bicycle development

    According to French media Usine Nouvelle, France recently announced a bicycle action plan, which includes strengthening infrastructure, expanding incentives, and promoting the development of the industry chain.

    The government plans to invest €2 billion from 2023 to 2027 to promote the popularization of bicycles. The bicycle is one of the key industries in France’s 2030 investment plan and will be produced locally.

    The French government will invest 100 million euros to support the development of the bicycle industry chain, with the goal of increasing production from 854,000 units in 2022 to 1.4 million units in 2027 and 2 million units in 2030.

    Spain’s bicycle industry has been unable to maintain its record sales year, with turnover down a modest 6% in 2022.

    In terms of unit prices, the average unit price (PVP) rose by 13.93% in 2022, closely related to increases in raw materials and transportation costs.

    The average price of bicycles sold in Spain, for the first time, exceeded €1,000 (€1,121), with an increase (+42.4%) in the average price of electric bicycles (€2,940) and of gravel bicycles, which are in high demand, to €1,589. On the other hand, the average price of city bikes (305€) fell by 0.4%.

    Electric bikes are on the rise again

    The best-selling bike category in 2022 was city bikes, with a 22.5% increase in sales, and e-bikes, with 236,183 units sold and a 5.7% increase in sales year-on-year.

    Despite accounting for 17.4% of unit sales, e-bikes consolidated their lead in sales for the third consecutive year (45.66% of bicycle sales share), followed by mountain bikes, which have historically led in sales, with 34.5% market share in volume and 28.45% share in sales volume.

    Compared to the previous year, the biggest decreases in sales were in gravel bikes (-34.35%) and mountain bikes (-23%).
