    European bicycle imports surge 30%

In a year when supply chain tensions have plagued the market, EU countries have seen significant and unprecedented growth in bicycle imports.

Since e-bike sales have been gaining momentum, the market value has been slowly but steadily declining.

The average retail price of bicycle products imported into Europe has now risen significantly.

The value of e-bike imports into Europe grew by double digits and surpassed the volume of bicycle shipments imported into Europe.

Total sales to Asian bicycle exporters in 2022 are down from 2021. Total shipments of regular bikes fell 6.37% from 5.4 million units in 2021 to more than 5 million units last year.

Shipments from Cambodia, the largest supplier, rose 18.44 percent to 1.2 million units.

    European Bicycle Imports Surge 30%

The country now supplies nearly a quarter of the EU’s bicycle imports.

    Cambodia’s market share increased from 18.9% in 2021 to 23.8% in 2022.

However, most of the top 10 bicycle exporters to the EU will ship fewer bikes in 2022 than in 2021.

Orders from traditionally large bicycle manufacturers, including China, are shifting to other countries such as Bangladesh, Tunisia and Thailand.

Bangladesh, in particular, is currently experiencing a boom in bicycle factory construction.

According to the country’s Export Promotion Bureau, Bangladesh is actively seeking to diversify its exports, with a focus on engineered products and bicycles, to meet growing demand in international markets.

Bangladesh is currently one of the countries benefiting from duty-free import sales of bicycles to the EU.

France plans to invest 2 billion euros in bicycle development

According to French media Usine Nouvelle, France recently announced a bicycle action plan, which includes strengthening infrastructure, expanding incentives, and promoting the development of the industry chain.

The government plans to invest €2 billion from 2023 to 2027 to promote the popularization of bicycles. The bicycle is one of the key industries in France’s 2030 investment plan and will be produced locally.

The French government will invest 100 million euros to support the development of the bicycle industry chain, with the goal of increasing production from 854,000 units in 2022 to 1.4 million units in 2027 and 2 million units in 2030.

French-made bicycles are innovative, environmentally friendly and affordable, and will be the trend of the future.

France plans to invest 2 billion euros in bicycle development

The French government plans to invest 250 million euros a year to expand bike lanes to 80,000 km by 2027 and 100,000 km by 2030, and to inject funds to improve bicycle safety.

In addition, the scope of subsidies will be expanded to include medium-vintage bicycles, with a view to developing the market for medium-vintage vehicles to promote environmental protection, enhance purchasing power and create jobs.

The government will also increase the permanent public transport allowance (€200-300) to encourage more people to ride bicycles to work.

Declining sales-Spain's bicycle industry still growing in production and employment

Spain’s bicycle industry has been unable to maintain its record sales year, with turnover down a modest 6% in 2022.

The news surprised industry observers as growth in e-bikes and city bikes bucked the trend.

After two years of record sales of more than 1.5 million bicycles per year in Spain, 2022 failed to reach that total.

AMBE, the Spanish bicycle industry association, highlighted a 45.1% increase in turnover in 2022 compared to pre-pandemic 2019, despite a decline in sales.

Other positive factors led to an increase in employment in the Spanish bicycle industry in 2022, with a direct increase of 5.32% to 24,456 people.

Declining sales-Spain's bicycle industry still growing in production and employment

Employment and entrepreneurship are in record numbers. 3111 Sales, repair and rental of bicycles in Spain in 2022 increased by 2.74% and 401 new companies in operation compared to the previous year.

Spain’s bicycle production has also grown, with a record value increase of 2.8% to €255.8 million by 2022, more than twice as much as in 2019.

Compared to 2022, bicycle exports grew 76.5%, tripling the 2019 figure.

In 2022, 189 manufacturers of bicycles, parts and accessories were registered in Spain, an increase of 5% over the previous year.

Javier López, president of AMBE, said, “2022 will not be easy for the bicycle industry, but the increase in employment, the creation of companies and the positive performance of sales of electric and urban bicycles reflect the service society, cleaner transportation, work and business opportunities that the bicycle industry can offer to Spaniards. “

After two years of record sales and sales, 2022 was a year of adjustment, driven mainly by lower demand.

Compared to the previous year’s figures, Spain will sell more than 1.35 million bicycles in 2022, 13.59% less than in 2021, and the sector’s turnover will fall by 6% to €2.714 billion.

AMBE Secretary General Jesús Freire said, “Despite the absence of state assistance for the purchase and repair of bicycles, as in other neighboring countries, and the absence of tax incentives for cycling to work or buying a fleet of bicycles, allowing more people to use bicycles as a daily mode of travel.”

we are still doing better than expected in 2022. We compared the data to 2019 (before the pandemic and the Ukraine invasion), where bicycle sales increased by 7.6% and the industry’s turnover increased by 45.1%.”

In the sales figures, parts sales increased by 2.51% over the previous year, but sales declined in several accessory categories that performed exceptionally well in 2020 and 2021: helmets (-16.53%), textiles (-15.18%) and shoes (-6.82%).

In terms of unit prices, the average unit price (PVP) rose by 13.93% in 2022, closely related to increases in raw materials and transportation costs.

In the product sales mix, the most important is the increase in the share of sales of e-bikes (with a higher average price).

The average price of bicycles sold in Spain, for the first time, exceeded €1,000 (€1,121), with an increase (+42.4%) in the average price of electric bicycles (€2,940) and of gravel bicycles, which are in high demand, to €1,589. On the other hand, the average price of city bikes (305€) fell by 0.4%.

Electric bikes are on the rise again

The best-selling bike category in 2022 was city bikes, with a 22.5% increase in sales, and e-bikes, with 236,183 units sold and a 5.7% increase in sales year-on-year.

Despite accounting for 17.4% of unit sales, e-bikes consolidated their lead in sales for the third consecutive year (45.66% of bicycle sales share), followed by mountain bikes, which have historically led in sales, with 34.5% market share in volume and 28.45% share in sales volume.

Compared to the previous year, the biggest decreases in sales were in gravel bikes (-34.35%) and mountain bikes (-23%).
