Multiple brands involved in frame breakage fiasco
According to RTL Nieuws, six owners have filed reports with NVWA about broken frames on their respective cargo bikes, involving a number of well-known brands such as Vogue, Cangoo and Bakfiets.nl.
The news quickly caused an uproar in the industry and among consumers, causing people to re-examine the safety of cargo bikes.
In the face of this emergency, NVWA responded quickly by sending inspectors to conduct on-site inspections of the vehicles involved. In Ashley Wentink’s case, her Vogue cargo bike received immediate attention from the NVWA after it was damaged.
Not only did the inspectors carry out a detailed inspection of her vehicle, but they also confirmed that several other cargo bikes of the same brand had already experienced similar problems, indicating that the problem was not an isolated incident.
In addition, NVWA sent an information request to brands such as Vogue requesting relevant information such as product technical specifications and complaint handling mechanisms for further investigation.
The brands have responded to the questions, with Vogue stating that it will fully cooperate with NVWA’s investigation and looks forward to receiving feedback as soon as possible, and Cangoo revealing that it has received ten reports of broken frames in the past seven years and is currently investigating the cause in conjunction with its suppliers.
Bakfiets.nl, on the other hand, insisted that its products are safe and reliable, stressing that child safety is its top priority, and said that a limited number of frames are replaced every year for various reasons, all of which are rigorously analyzed.
The root of the problem is the welded frame
Reports indicate that the heart of the problem lies in the welded frames of cargo bikes, which appeared to break the middle during use.
This raises the question of whether it was the quality of the materials, the production process or a design flaw that led to the problem, and NVWA’s investigation will focus on these aspects, RTL Nieuws noted, adding that NVWA has decided to publish the name of the brand involved and continue to investigate the root cause of the problem in depth. The incident undoubtedly had a significant impact on the Dutch cargo bike market.
On the one hand, consumer confidence has been undermined, and some potential buyers may choose to travel by other means; on the other hand, consumers who have already purchased cargo bikes of the brand in question are faced with the problem of repairing, replacing or even returning the bikes.
